ACA-compliant plans are comprehensive and must include coverage for the following essential health benefits:

• Preventive care and wellness services, including chronic disease management

• Pediatric services, including dental and vision care

• Prescription medications

• Emergency care

• Hospital stays

• Outpatient care

• Laboratory services

• Maternity and newborn care

• Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment

• Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices that support the development, maintenance, or improvement of daily living skills

An ACA health plan may be a great option if you:

• Are self-employed

• Have a pre-existing condition

• Have experienced a Qualified Life Event (QLE)

• Want a comprehensive health plan that covers a wide range of medical needs throughout the year

Since ACA Open Enrollment only occurs once a year — unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a QLE — you may want to consider other options if you need coverage midyear. Alternatives such as short-term health plans, health share programs, or indemnity plans may provide the flexibility you need.

If you have a pre-existing condition, ACA-compliant plans are especially beneficial. With these plans they cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on your current conditions.
